The city of Carmel is working with Regenstrief Institute to design a program for all independently living and physically active seniors age 50 and older.

The Engaging4Health initiative will utilize the technique of "population health," which aims to improve the health of an entire human population through collaboration and the use of technology.

Carmel wants to be known as a "healthy living community" by helping its seniors avoid unecessary medical events and improve their overall quality of life.

Once qualified and screened, participants will be given an activity tracker to help gather and report exercise data.

Population Health Engaging4Health is executing the first phase of our vision by getting seniors moving! Our pilot group is hitting the pavement today with 40+ seniors wearing Fitbits and providing their step data back to us to enable the brilliant minds at the Regenstrief Institute to further their investigation in public health for seniors.

The future vision of Engaging4Health not only focuses on activity levels, but also dietary and social engagement.

Culinary Medicine is being explored as an improved dietary program arranged through both special menu items in the dining facilities at senior residences as well as resident’s option of purchasing specialty foods designated as E4H meals from various partner markets including the Market District, Meijer, Kroger, Whole Foods, Earth Fare etc.

Social engagement is another important aspect of senior healthy living and residents will be encouraged to engage socially through the many Carmel venues available to the senior residents.

This collaborative effort includes healthcare professionals such as medical doctors, nurses, wellness coaches, dieticians and personal trainers.
